When I first met photographer Carol Stevenson, I was captivated by her stories of the endangered Asian elephants and their keepers (mahouts) that she was documenting—and her strong commitment to saving the animals from a life of abuse and neglect, while preserving the unique mahout culture. Given exclusive access to a refuge in Thailand that provides sanctuary for elephants and employment for mahouts, she has created a series of intimate portraits that reveal the true personalities of those gentle giants and the special bonds they have forged with their keepers. I think they are beautiful and incredibly inspiring. The proceeds of these limited-edition prints, numbered and signed by the artist, will benefit the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand. Enjoy! -JG

Carol Stevenson is a fine art landscape and environmental photographer based in California. Her love of travel has led her to photograph some of the more remote areas of the world while living and working in the Asia-Pacific region. The Elephants & Mahouts project is an educational and fundraising vehicle that spans five years and allows her to document the endangered Asian elephant and capture on film the complex and powerful relationship between elephants and mahouts (owners/keepers). Proceeds go to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand.
