And now Philip and Katy Leakey have given that age-old art a contemporary twist in their collection of necklaces and bracelets made by the Maasai using natural grass and African hardwood beads. The Leakeys, who live in the Great Rift Valley among the Maasai, have found a way to give back to their local community by creating stunning jewelry from environmentally sustainable materials.

The Leakey Collection, founded in 2002 by Philip and Katy Leakey, designs contemporary home products and jewelry, which are handmade by the Maasai of Kenya. The company employs more than 1,200 Kenyans depending on the time of year, providing much-needed economic enrichment. The Leakeys live in the rural bush of the Great Rift Valley among the Maasai. Women work under the acacia trees at mobile work sites in their community, which are set up at the discretion of the Maasai women and elders. All materials used in the collection are environmentally sustainable.
